3 Ways to Prevent Sea Glass Jewelry from Developing Premature Wear

by Natalie Fields

Precious stones, like diamonds and rubies, are not the only decorative pieces that will stand out in jewelry. Sea glass is often used in handcrafted jewelry, and is really a sight to behold. Sea glass is basically man-made glass that has tossed and tumbled around in sea for approximately 7 to 10 years until it has a beautiful and elegant frosty appearance. Although beautiful, they are a tad fragile and delicate. Here are 3 maintenance tips that will keep the sea glass in its best condition and form.

Store Sea Glass Jewelry Properly

When you're not wearing any handcrafted sea glass jewelry you've bought, you need to make sure to store them properly. Place them inside their own microfiber dustbags to prevent the surface of the sea glass from getting scratched up from getting tossed around with other jewelry you have sitting around. If you don't have a microfiber dustbag, store the sea glass jewelry on soft surfaces, like felt or cotton. This will help prevent the sea glass from accumulating scratch marks on its surfaces. Soft surfaces also act as a cushion to prevent the sea glass from accidentally chipping.

Avoid Wearing Lotions, Sunscreen & Perfume

You never know how the sea glass is going to react with different types of chemicals. If you don't want to remove the frosty luster of your handcrafted jewelry, avoid wearing lotions, sunscreen and perfume in the same places where you're wearing the jewelry. For example, if you're wearing a bracelet, avoid putting perfume on your wrist. Instead, dabble the perfume on your neck and inside your elbow.

Wash Regularly to Remove Tarnish Buildup

Although handcrafted sea glass jewelry is relatively durable, you still want to wash it regularly whenever possible to remove any tarnish buildup that accumulates. Don't use any harsh chemicals nor any professional jewelry cleaning agents to wash handcrafted sea glass jewelry. A soft rag with mild detergent is all that you need. If you're going to be washing several handcrafted sea glass jewelry pieces at the same time, consider using a coriander to hold the jewelry pieces.

Handcrafted sea glass jewelry is absolutely beautiful and astonishing. It goes well with many different types of outfits and fits with various styles. They're definitely a wonderful jewelry piece to invest in. Just be sure that you take good care of the jewelry, as sea glass is susceptible to scratches and tarnish buildup. For more information, ask local jewelers and suppliers before you buy handcrafted jewelry.
